Opening reception

New Town Hall. Foto: Stadt Leipzig

Sunday, 22.7.2018, 7-9 pm, New Town Hall, Obere Wandelhalle

Leipzig evolved rapidly into one of Germany’s leading cities at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. A new town hall building was needed for administration as well as representation purposes due to growth and prosperity. Therefore the Pleißenburg, a building from the 14th century, was torn down to erect a monumental building, the so-called Neues Rathaus (New Town Hall) which opened in 1905. Only the centrally located tower looks like a reminiscence of the medieval building. Hugo Licht, who was Leipzig’s senior construction manager back then, designed not only the Neues Rathaus, but also the building for the Hochschule für Musik und Theater, which was the first building in Germany to be genuinely designed for a conservatoire. Burkard Jung, Leipzig’s mayor, invites all IAML Congress participants to join his reception on Sunday, July 22nd, at the Neues Rathaus, Obere Wandelhalle. We look forward to welcoming you there.

In the permanent exhibition of the German Music Archive you will gain an insight into the history of the sound carriers and playback devices from the Edison phonograph to the Blu-ray player. The German Book and Writing Museum is one of the world's oldest and most important museums in the field of 5000 years of media history.
